Semblance, Henry Erdman’s debut solo exhibition, examines the tension between refinement and rupture through ceramic vessels that draw on functional forms to explore the construction of identity and the surfaces that both protect and conceal it. Each piece is carefully built and laboriously burnished to a smooth, perfected finish, then deliberately disrupted through intricate carving. These interventions fracture the surface, revealing the clay body beneath. Moving between polish and exposure, the works hold utility and subjectivity in balance, inviting consideration of what remains when constructed surfaces are broken and the object is left unmediated by embellishment.
